On a small plot near the house the best plan is a mix of vegetables and a few perennials that feed the family first and sell the surplus, because home grown vegetables save money and the extra fetches cash with little transport. Plant a variety so you harvest something through the year, such as leafy greens, tomato, chilli, brinjal, okra, gourds and beans, plus a few long term plants like banana, papaya, drumstick or curry leaf along the edges. Growing several crops together also spreads risk and keeps pests down compared to one crop. Use kitchen waste compost and reuse household water to keep cost very low. Because it is close to home you can give it daily care and harvest fresh, and selling surplus locally is easy with no real transport. This is also good nutrition for the family. As you gain confidence you can expand the better selling vegetables. Choose vegetables suited to your climate and season, and your local KVK or horticulture office can suggest the right varieties and even provide seed kits.
My backyard plot feeds the whole family vegetables and I sell the extra to neighbours. The savings on buying vegetables is itself a good income. Start small and add as you learn.
