follow the crowd vs different crop price crash diversification market timing crop planning risk

Growing exactly what everyone around you grows is a known trap, because when the whole area harvests the same crop at the same time, the market is flooded and the price often crashes. But going completely different also has its own risk if there is no buyer for that odd crop near you. The balanced answer is to keep part of your land in a proven crop that has a sure market or MSP, and use part to try a different or off season crop where you see a price gap. Look for crops that are in demand but in short supply locally, or the same crop grown to come to market when others do not have it. Before switching, make sure there is a real buyer, processing unit or distant mandi for the different crop, otherwise a good harvest with no buyer is a loss. Diversifying across two or three crops also protects you if one price collapses. Study which crops your area oversupplies and which are scarce, and confirm demand and price trends with your KVK and traders before changing your plan.
Whole village grew onion one year, price fell to throwaway rates at harvest. I had kept some area in a vegetable nobody else grew and that saved my season. Do not follow the crowd blindly.
True, but I once grew something different with no buyer nearby and lost more on transport. Different is good only if there is a market. Find the buyer first.
