Intercropping means growing a second crop in the gaps of your main crop so the land earns extra, and the trick is to pick a companion that does not compete with the main crop for light, water and nutrients. Pair a tall crop with a short one, a deep rooted crop with a shallow rooted one, and ideally include a legume that adds nitrogen, for example pigeon pea with groundnut or soybean, maize with cowpea or black gram, or a short vegetable or pulse between widely spaced cotton or sugarcane rows. Keep the main crop as the priority and fit the intercrop into the spare space at a sensible row ratio so the main crop yield is not pulled down. The intercrop should usually be shorter in duration so it is harvested before the main crop needs the full field. Done right, the extra crop covers some of your costs or gives a bonus income, and a legume intercrop also helps the soil. Done wrong, both crops suffer. Start on a small part of the field, keep the spacing the experts advise, and confirm the right crop pair, row ratio and spacing for your main crop with your KVK before doing the whole field.

I grow black gram between my wide spaced cotton rows. The pulse is harvested early and gives me some cash before cotton picking starts. Just keep the spacing right so cotton does not get shaded.

Pigeon pea with groundnut has worked for me for years. The land is never empty and the soil stays good. Try one acre first before changing your whole field.
