Should I switch to a less labour intensive crop because of the labour problem?

My current crops need a lot of hand labour I can no longer arrange. Does it make sense to change to crops that need fewer workers?

Crop choice is a real lever against labour shortage, but change it with eyes open, not in a panic. Some crops are far more labour hungry than others, vegetables, cotton, chilli and sugarcane need many hands for picking and cutting, while many cereals and pulses are largely mechanisable from sowing to harvest. If labour is your binding constraint, shifting some area to crops that fit machine sowing and combine harvesting can genuinely reduce your dependence and peak stress. But weigh the whole picture before switching: the new crop's profitability and price stability, your soil and water suitability, market and buyer access, and your own experience with it. A safer approach than switching everything is to rebalance, keep your most profitable labour heavy crop on the area you can reliably staff, and move part of the farm to a mechanisable crop. Look also at varieties bred for uniform maturity and machine harvest within your existing crop. Decide on full economics, not labour alone.

I shifted part of my land from a labour heavy vegetable to maize that I sow and harvest by machine. Kept the vegetable only on the area I can properly staff. Stress dropped a lot.
