Urea and DAP are the two most-used fertilizers on Indian farms, but they do very different jobs. Urea is a straight nitrogen (N) fertilizer carrying 46% N, the highest of any solid fertilizer, and is mainly used for top dressing to give crops a quick green push. DAP (Diammonium Phosphate) is a phosphatic fertilizer carrying 18% N and 46% P2O5, used mostly as a basal dose at sowing to build strong roots and early growth. Most farmers do not choose one over the other; they use both, DAP at planting for phosphorus and urea later for nitrogen. Understanding when and how much of each to apply prevents wastage, saves money and protects soil health.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Urea | DAP |
|---|---|---|
| Nutrient content | 46% Nitrogen (N) only | 18% N + 46% P2O5 (phosphorus) |
| Main role | Vegetative growth, leaf and stem development, green colour | Root development, early establishment, flowering and grain set |
| When to apply | Top dressing in 2-3 splits after sowing | Basal dose at or before sowing |
| Typical price | Around Rs 266 per 45 kg bag (subsidised, may change) | Around Rs 1350 per 50 kg bag (subsidised, may change) |
| Subsidy type | Price statutorily fixed by Government of India | Covered under Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) |
| Best for crops | All crops needing nitrogen, especially cereals like wheat, paddy, maize | Most crops at sowing, especially pulses, oilseeds and cereals |
| Cautions | Overuse burns leaves, lowers efficiency and pollutes water; never use alone | Does not supply potassium or sulphur; do not rely on it alone for N |
| Form | White prilled or granular, fully water soluble | Granular, brown-black, water soluble |
✅ Choose Urea when
Choose urea when your crop is already established and needs a nitrogen boost for green, leafy growth. Use it as top dressing in splits, for example in wheat or paddy 3-4 weeks after sowing and again at the tillering or panicle stage. It is also the cheapest source of nitrogen per kg.
✅ Choose DAP when
Choose DAP at sowing time when the crop needs phosphorus for root growth and early establishment. It is ideal as a basal dose placed near the seed. Because it also carries 18% nitrogen, it gives a small starter dose of N along with phosphorus.
Verdict
Urea and DAP are partners, not rivals. DAP goes in at sowing for phosphorus and a starter dose of nitrogen, while urea is added later as top dressing for the bulk of the nitrogen need. For most crops a balanced plan uses DAP as basal and urea in splits, alongside a potassium source like MOP. Always follow a soil test and recommended doses rather than over-applying either one.
